Devon Distillery is a boutique distillery based in (you guessed it) Devon. I worked with them for several months when they first launched their website to get some SEO-driven, interesting content on there. The goal was to improve their ranking power, and create some informative content to raise awareness of their quirky product. Originally they only sold Grappa, under the ingenious name ‘Dappa’ (I wish I could take credit for that Deven/Grappa portmanteau, but alas, they thought of it without me!). Since then I’ve been delighted to watch them thrive and grow, creating their own Gin School and Rum School (you literally learn to brew on an old-fashioned yellow school bus, it’s awesome!).
Copywriting For A Boutique Business
The content I was creating for Devon Distillery was in the early days of the company – 2017 – when they were first starting out. Nobody really knew much about grappa, other than that it had a bit of a bad rep. A lot of people viewed it as cheap, nasty tasting stuff, so we set about changing people’s opinions on that front! I wrote a series of blogs that delved into the history of grappa, as well as putting together tasting guides, comparisons to other types of liquor, and informative posts that looked at where grappa was produced, what colour it was supposed to be, and other questions that needed answers. It was a very fun project, partly because it was a boutique business that really cared about its product. As a freelance writer for distillery clients, it’s not often you get to focus on a single product. Other distilleries I’ve written for have had multiple products, either a range of one spirit or a range of spirits. It was such a joy to be able to dive so deeply into the history and specifics of grappa. It’s also not a spirit I’d come across before, so it gave me a new favourite tipple!
