It doesn’t matter what it is that you do as a freelancer – if you are living this kind of working lifestyle, you need to make sure that you are ready for the experience. And that means that you are going to have to know what you can do to try and gain as many clients as possible. Figuring out how to get more clients as a freelancer is, honestly, the hardest part of the job. Doing whatever you do (in my case, writing) is simple; you know how to do that, you’re good at it (or at least learning to be good at it, and hopefully constantly improving). But getting clients? That’s not usually a skillset that comes with being a writer, or designer, or coach, or whatever it is you do.
There’s a reason I ended up working as Head of Marketing at an agency; in order to get more clients as a freelancer writer, I had to learn marketing. And I got so good at it, I started doing it for other people. But you don’t need (and probably don’t want!) to dive that far down the marketing rabbit hole. All you really need is a solid strategy for gaining more clients as a freelancer in today’s world. To that end, here are a few tips that will help…

Know Your Brand
So many freelancers are out there just chugging along trying to get work, without having thought about some of the essentials. First of all, you really need to make sure that you know your brand, and that you are able to really sell it as it is. Your brand is the kind of thing that is going to be really useful to get clear on, and it helps you personally to know much more about what you are about as well, so it’s something of a win-win. Figure this out and you will find that much else falls into place.
Be Contactable
A lot of freelancers miss out on many opportunities simply from not being as contactable as they could be. This is a mistake you probably can’t afford to make. As long as you have the appropriate means of being contacted, and you keep them in place, that is going to help you a lot. Check your emails frequently, get whatever mobile phone accessories wholesale you might need and make sure that you are advertising your work number in the appropriate places. This will help you to land more clients.
Watch Your Competitors
Knowing what your competitors are up to can be really useful for you, and you’ll find that you are probably going to be able to learn quite a lot this way that you might otherwise not know about. Having a sense of what your competitors are good and bad at means that you can carve out your own place so much more easily on the whole, and that is something that is always going to be useful for sure. So make sure that you have thought about this and you are placing close attention on what they are up to.
Hone Your Craft
All of that will be worthless, however, if you don’t have the skills to back it up. It’s going to be necessary to make sure that you hone your craft, as this is the kind of thing that really helps a lot with actually producing good work. And in the end, it’s the quality of the work that really matters and that helps to bring in more clients in the future. All in all, this is one of those things that you might find you want to work on a lot.
